A warm thank you to the Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk County for partnering with us for a valuable Fall Prevention Workshop at The Bristal at East Northport!
Over 50 residents participated, learning essential strategies to help prevent falls and properly use mobility aids like canes, walkers, and wheelchairs. The session covered best practices for standing, dressing, and walking safely - an important part of maintaining independence. This workshop marks the beginning of an ongoing educational series at The Bristal at East Northport.
Fall are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, but with the right precautions, they can often be prevented. Here are a few key tips to help reduce fall risks:
- Keep pathways clear. Remove clutter, loose rugs, cords, and assorted pet-related items that could become easy tripping hazards.
- Use proper lighting. Make sure hallways and stairwells are well-lit, especially at night.
- Wear supportive shoes. Avoid loose slippers or socks without grippers, which can contribute to slipping.
- Move mindfully. Take your time when standing up and use mobility aids as recommended.
- Stay active. Gentle exercises that improve balance and strength can help prevent falls.
