Each of our communities plans a day of celebration for our residents and their families. Every year, our communities look forward to celebrating Grandparents Day with various activities and opportunities. We invite our residents to celebrate with their families on-site, with multiple family-friendly events.
What makes this celebration truly special is how each of our The Bristal communities put their own unique stamp on the day. While every location shares the same commitment to exceptional hospitality and person-driven care, the beauty lies in how each community tailors their celebration to reflect the personalities and preferences of their residents and families.
Some communities might welcome visitors with the gentle melodies of live music performances, creating an atmosphere where three generations can dance to familiar tunes together. Others might set up interactive game stations where grandparents can share their competitive spirit with grandchildren, creating new memories while reliving old ones.

Why Do We Celebrate Grandparents Day?
Grandparents hold a special place in our lives. They tend to have a profound impact on our lives, providing additional guidance and support. But when did Grandparents Day start, and why do we have a day celebrating our grandparents?
In 1969, a nine-year-old named Russell Capper wrote to President Richard Nixon asking him for a day to celebrate and honor grandparents. By 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation making the first Sunday after Labor Day National Grandparents Day. The next year, Grandparents Day was celebrated for the first time in the United States.
The National Grandparents Day proclamation stated three purposes for granting it a holiday:
- To honor grandparents
- To give grandparents an opportunity to showcase their love for their grandchildren
- To help children learn and gain guidance from their grandparents
Now, The Bristal continues to celebrate this holiday each year because we have seen the joy it brings to our residents and their families.

This year, our Grandparents Day celebration will incorporate aspects of our signature immersive programming series. Each of our communities will choose from the following themes, under the National Assisted Living Week Theme Ageless Adventure:
- New York Minute: Long Island Edition – A celebration of local pride, nostalgia, and the stories of Long Island.
- Showtime! On with the Show – A theatrical journey through music, performance, and behind-the-scenes magic.
- Legends of Leisure – A luxury travel-inspired escape into global cultures and relaxation.
- The Time Traveler’s Lounge – A decade-spanning adventure through memory, change, and imagined futures.
