At The Bristal at East Meadow, love was in full bloom this Valentine's Day as Carole and Sidney Zirlin celebrated 65 years of marriage by renewing their vows in front of family, friends, and fellow residents.
Their love story, which began in the bustling offices of a comic book publishing company, has unfolded into a lifetime of cherished memories, adventures, and unwavering devotion.
"Love is nature's way of giving a reason to be living..."
Carole, a bookkeeper, and Sidney, a CPA, first met at Harvey Publications in Manhattan, where they worked on some of the most beloved comic books of the time including Casper the Friendly Ghost and Richie Rich. What started as a workplace connection would blossom into a lifelong romance. The two married in 1960 at The Park Terrace Catering Hall in the Bronx, near Yankee Stadium, then embarked on a two-week honeymoon in Miami, FL and Aruba. Over the years, they built a beautiful life together in Bay Terrace, Queens, NY, raising a son and daughter, then later welcoming two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
"Two lovers kissed and the world stood still..."
Throughout their marriage, Carole and Sidney's love has been strengthened by shared experiences, especially their love of travel. Every adventure added another page to their love story. They've found moments of joy in the steps they've taken together, particularly the Cha-Cha and Merengue they love to dance.
The Zirlins' secret to a lasting marriage? Flexibility, kindness, and an easygoing spirit. Granddaughter Ashley told NBC4, "It's such a rare kind of love that you don't see so often in the world anymore."
As Sidney sweetly puts it, marrying Carole was the best part of his life.
"Love is a many-splendored thing."
On February 13th, surrounded by their loving community at The Bristal at East Meadow, Carole and Sidney reaffirmed the vows they took 65 years earlier, providing that true love only grows stronger with time - 23,725 days to be exact.
As they celebrate this milestone, their story reminds us all that love - just like their wedding song by the Four Aces proclaims - is a many-splendored thing.
